Have you ever had to make a decision (big or small) and just couldn’t figure it out? You made a pros vs cons list. You tried to weigh all the possible outcomes. And you surveyed your friends and family. All to no avail. But what if I told you that you have an inner GPS (guidance-perception-spirit) to help you take your next best step.
Cultivating your intuition can help you to gain clarity about what’s working, what isn’t, and what truly matters to you.
When I started to create my pleasure practice I wasn’t really sure what I wanted. For so long, I had ignored my inner voice opting instead to do what I was “supposed to do.” Not surprisingly, I became frustrated, fed up and just plain tired. Tired of looking for answers outside myself – I turned inward. I began to listen to my inner voice. One small decision here. Another tiny decision there. I learned how to trust my inner GPS – my intuition.
When we consistently suppress and distrust our intuitive knowingness, looking instead for authority, validation, and approval from others, we give our personal power away. Shakti Gawain
Getting clear about your needs and desires is not only important to experiencing more pleasure in your life, but also helps you to navigate difficult times. Cultivating your intuition can help you to gain clarity about what’s working, what isn’t, and what truly matters to you.
3 Steps To Cultivating Your Intuition
Understanding Your Intuition. A hunch. An inkling. An “inner voice”, that gut feeling, that little something instinctual from within that tells you how you feel beneath those layers of logic. A sudden, strong judgment or knowing that you cannot immediately explain. This is intuition.
Although your intuition seems to emerge from an unknown inner force, it actually begins with a perception of something in your environment—a facial expression, a tone of voice, a visual inconsistency so fleeting you’re not even aware you noticed. Intuition is a mind-body awareness, a sensory alert system that takes in new information (e.g., foreign place, a first date, business launch) combined with stored memories and knowledge to help you gain insight about a situation. Your inner GPS is an intelligent system tailored to your life experiences.
Developing Somatic Awareness. Your intuition uses all of your senses to receive information and then speaks to you through your body. When making a decision, however big or small, pay attention to how you physically feel. Do you feel expansive or contracted? Light or heavy? Also, tune into your senses. Do you recall memories, places or people in your mind’s eye? Does a song suddenly pop into your head? Are there any particular scents you smell? Is there a certain taste in your mouth?
Get curious. Play. Learn to connect with your intuition to help you explore pleasure and find what feels good in your body. You want to establish a baseline of how you feel when you make a decision that aligns with your values and inner GPS. This way you can began to trust yourself.
Practice. First, be prepared to record your experiences. Keep an Intuition Journal. If you already have a journal, create space for daily entries about your intuitive exercises. Second, you want to practice, practice, practice. The more you use your intuition, the better you will become at trusting your inner voice. When faced with a situation that challenges you to stretch beyond your comfort zone try the following: do some research, take the time to look at your options, get clear about what you’d like insight about, and then listen to your intuition.
Try This Exercise. Take a moment to center yourself. Quiet your mind by focusing on your breath and feel your body – both physical and energetic body. Then bring into your awareness a question you have (for example: should I take that vacation?). Try on option 1 (ex: sincerely imagine yourself buying your plane ticket – see if, feel it, think it). Then check with your inner state – how do you feel? Where do you feel it in your body? Do you feel tight (contraction) or relaxed and open (expansion)? Then try on option 2 (ex: sincerely imagine yourself not buying the plane ticket – see if, feel it, think it). Check in with your inner state – are you experiencing expansion or contraction? Now, you’ll have a good sense of your intuitive answer to the question.
